ETHICAL CHALLENGES OF RESEARCH SERIES

Contemporary researchers face a variety of challenges: reduced federal funding, increasing publication pressures, controversies over conflicts of interest, high profile suspensions of clinical trials, and growing public scrutiny of research methods and outcomes. Success in research and professional development requires awareness of these challenges. It also requires skill in managing them. While professional codes of conduct and principles of responsible conduct of research offer some guidance, they may leave trainees unclear how to proceed in real world disputes or “gray areas.” To address these concerns, the UC San Diego Research Ethics Program and the Office of Postdoctoral and Visiting Scholar Affairs have collaborated to bring UC San Diego postdoctoral scholars the Ethical Challenges of Research Series. The purpose of this series is to discuss what the responsible conduct of research involves.  The series is comprised of two parts: an introductory overview offered every month and special topics offered every other month.

Ethical Challenges of Research Schedule 2015

  • Introduction - 2nd Tues. every month starting Jan.
    • Part of essential training for postdoctoral scholars

FINANCIAL EDUCATION WORKSHOP SERIES FOR POSTDOCS

“Save early, save often” is a mantra touted by many financial planning websites and experts.  Time is critical when saving for retirement, or any financial goal.  The earlier you start saving, the more your money can work for you through the power of compounding.  Every 10 years you delay starting to save for retirement, you will need to save three times as much each month to catch up according to the U.S. Dept. of Labor. Ideally, you should put away 10% of your gross income if you are in your 20s.  If you start saving in your 40s or 50s, up that per month number to 20% or more.

If you been thinking about it, but have not started saving yet, don’t despair!  Starting now is better than never starting at all.  To help you get started and understand how to maximize your financial potential, the Office of Postdoctoral and Visiting Scholar Affairs has teamed up with MetLife to offer the “Financial Education Workshop Series for Postdocs”.

Each workshop will discuss the 10 ways to set yourself up for financial success for that specific topic. As many people are concerned about how to plan for their financial future as their careers advance (e.g. purchasing a home, investment options and to how to plan for a move to a different location or a return to a home country), the program offers a complimentary one-on-one personal consultation.  These one-on-one consultations are a great way to get individual solutions that fit your specific financial situation. If you would like to schedule a session, time slots will be available to meet on campus the next week after each workshop.  These one hour sessions with a Financial Advisor are confidential and complimentary.  A sign-up sheet will be available at each workshop.

Come join us to learn about the topics listed below and create a strategy for your financial future!

  • Jan. 27 - Smart Money Moves in your 20’s & 30’s
  • Feb. 19 - Investment 101
  • March 19 - Tax Strategies
  • April 16 - Financial Planning Concepts

All workshops will be held from 12 – 1:30 pm in Medical Education and Telemedicine Building (MET), Room 204.

INDUSTRY JOB SEARCH SERIES

As a postdoc, you most likely only have experience in academia.  But what if you prefer a career in industry?  How do you begin your search for an industry position? How do translate your academic training and experience for potential industry positions? How do you become a competitive candidate and target the right companies for you? How do you secure an interview and then make a strong positive impression? How can you re-think the application process to be more proactive than reactive? Join us for the Industry Job Search Series to answer these questions.

Each seminar will focus on the successive phases of an Industry Job Search.  The first seminar in the series will be presented by Melanie Nelson, Ph.D., author of “Navigating the Path to Industry” and who has over 10 years’ experience as a hiring manager and worked over 15 years in local industry.  Barbara Preston, Ph.D., recruiter and co-founder of PharmaScouts, will present the rest of the seminars. Both presenters will share tips and best practices to help you succeed in transitioning from academia to industry.  It is important to change one’s mindset from “I’m a postdoc” as a negative to a positive.  Attend this series to learn how to positively leverage being a postdoc.

Learn how to identify companies and make targeted lists of companies you would want to work for [whether or not a position is posted], identify the right people to connect with internally using available resources and discover how to connect with those people directly to assist your transition from academia.

Passing the Interview Hurdle - April 1, 2015

Learn about phone screens, the in-person interview with multiple individuals at different levels, and the scientific seminar.  This workshop is a combination of universal job interview insights and tips specific for new-to-industry postdoctoral applicants to help with the common questions and challenges you will face.

All workshops will be held from 12 – 1 pm in the Leichtag Building, room 107.

April 8, 2015: The Three Laws of Communication with Jean-luc Doumont, Ph.D.

One of the core abilities for a researcher pursuing any career path, is effective communication.  Useful as each of them can be, a large body of tips and tricks is impossible to remember, at least in a practical, usable way, unless it is structured into a balanced, meaningful hierarchy. To provide you with an opportunity to better communicate, we have invited the immensely popular speaker Jean-luc Doumont to UC San Diego on April 8.  This talk proposes and illustrates three simple yet solid ideas that lead to more effective communication and that underpin every other guideline: easy to remember, readily applicable, and always relevant—in short, valuable for the rest of your life. Join us for this workshop and invite your friends, colleagues, labmates, students and faculty too!

April 13, 2015: Career Development Event with Joanne Kamens, Ph.D.

The Ludwig Cancer Research Career Development Committee in collaboration with the UC San Diego Postdoctoral Association and Office of Postdoctoral and Visiting Scholar Affairs are excited to present a special career development event by Dr. Joanne Kamens. She will be presenting 2 talks: “Not networking 101: Building relationships for success” on April 13, 2015 from 2:30-3:30 pm and “Leadership skills: Topics for new managers” from 4-5 pm. Dr. Kamens received her PhD in Genetics from Harvard Medical School and spent 15 years in the biomedical research industry before becoming the Executive Director of Addgene. Dr. Kamens has worked extensively to promote the career development of younger scientists and especially to promote women in science.

  • Not networking 101: Building relationships for success - Networking has gotten a really bad name these days. I take your card, you take my card and then we don’t call each other. This workshop is designed to reintroduce you to how strong professional relationships can be necessary for most people to succeed in their careers. It will provide practical tools for meeting people and for nurturing new and established connections.
  • Leadership skills: Topics for new managers - Everyone knows someone who is a great scientist but a bad supervisor. May 19, 2015: Life at a Liberal Arts College

Interested in teaching at Liberal Arts College, but not sure what to expect? Join us for a morning discussion and networking lunch with faculty and administrators from Bates College, Dickinson College, Reed College, Wesleyan University and Williams College that want to recruit potential faculty across a wide variety of disciplines. These institutions are part of a larger consortium of more than 20 liberal arts colleges (known as LADO) with an interest in recruiting talented new faculty. Across this consortium of schools, there were ~ 115 tenure track faculty openings last year, and there are ~125 tenure track openings currently being advertised for the 2015-16 academic year (along with roughly two dozen fellowship and postdoctoral opportunities). We encourage graduate students and postdocs, even if they are not yet on the job market, to attend. This is an opportunity to learn about careers at liberal arts colleges generally, and to get specific advice about how to prepare for the application process in advance as well as when you are actually ready to enter the job market. Lunch will be provided.
